Roofs of small pickups tested by IIHS, only Frontier/Equator gets good rating

Sunday, February 7th, 2010

pickups_chart_020410Among all the 2010 model vehicles in the Small Pickup Truck class tested, only the Nissan Frontier, also sold as the Suzuki Equator earned the highest possible rating of “good” from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety or IIHS http://www.iihs.org. Other pickups tested were the Ford Ranger, which got an “acceptable” rating, as well as the Toyota Tacoma, the Chevy Colorado, a rebadged GMC Canyon and the Dodge Dakota, which all got “marginal”, the second lowest possible rating.

To get a “good” rating from the IIHS, a vehicle must have a roof that’s twice as strong as the current federal safety standard. This requirement is based on the Institute’s research that says passengers of a vehicle with a strong roof have the highest protection against rollover crashes, which is one of the most serious types of vehicular accidents.

According to statistics, rollover crashes are a lot more common in SUVs and pickup trucks than in cars, with almost half of all pickup truck occupant deaths in 2008 attributed to rollover crashes. Having a strong roof does not just reduce the risk of injury from contact with the roof during rollovers, it also prevents people from being ejected out of the vehicle through the windshield, windows and doors opened up after the roof gets deformed.

Even with a “good” rating in roof strength-to-weight ratio, the Nissan Frontier/Suzuki Equator still failed to be a “Top Safety Pick”, because it only earned an “acceptable” rating in protection against neck injury in rear crashes. To be a “Top Safety Pick”, a vehicle must earn a “good” rating in front, side, rear and rollover crashes and have Electronic Stability Control, which reduces the chances of fatal rollovers significantly.

"As a group, small pickups aren't performing as well as small cars or small SUVs in all of the Institute's safety tests. None of the ones we tested is a top-notch performer across the board. In fact, no small pickup earns our Top Safety Pick award," said IIHS Senior Vice President David Zuby.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA made a ruling raising the federal roof strength requirement in April of 2009. According to this new ruling, vehicles with a weight rating of 6,000 to 10,000 pounds should be able to withstand a force corresponding 1.5 times of their unloaded weight. The former ruling only required vehicles with a weight rating of up to 6,000 pounds to have a strength-to-weight ratio of 1.5 to 3. Also, the vehicles’ roofs are required to maintain a certain headroom measurement during testing and both sides of a roof will be tested sequentially and each side will be required to meet the said standard. This will be phased-in starting September 2012 and all vehicles will be required to comply with it by September 2016.

Furthermore, the IIHS also conducted side impact crash tests and the Frontier/Equator, as well as the Ranger and the Tacoma all had “good” ratings. The Chevrolet Colorado rated “poor” because of the lack of additional airbags to protect the driver’s chest and pelvis, as well as its poor structure. IIHS also reported that the dummy’s head almost moved around the standard curtain side airbag upon impact during testing. The Dakota had a different problem altogether. Its optional curtain side airbags failed to deploy upon impact.

In addition, the 2010 Dakota does not have standard side airbags unlike all the vehicles in its class when an agreement among 15 manufacturers was made way back in 2003 to make safety improvements that would reduce the risk for people in front and side crashes involving larger and heavier SUVs and pickup trucks. While the agreement was made specifying performance criteria instead of features, side airbags is an important feature to make this happen.

"Chrysler is the only manufacturer we know of that isn't living up to the spirit of the 2003 agreement," said Zuby.

Chrysler engineers identified a problem with the computer program algorithm which determines when the airbags should be fired and are currently working on a fix. The IIHS will be conducting another test on the Dakota and will publish the results soon after.

PickupTrucks’ Top 10 Significant Trucks of the Decade

Monday, January 4th, 2010

f150

The economic downturn has indeed hit the pickup truck market hard especially in the past 2 years, but despite the difficulties it has caused, it’s undeniable how much the pickup truck industry has advanced in the past decade. In an article, Mike Levine of PickupTrucks.com named the Top 10 Significant Trucks of the Decade.

Crew cabs have been popular overseas way before it was introduced in America. The 2000 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab was the first compact pickup with four full-size doors sold in the US market. After it was released, buyers welcomed the addition of another option besides regular and extended cab because it allowed them to accommodate more passengers in their pickup trucks unlike before. Other manufacturers picked up on this and later, crew cabs became a major player in the pickup truck industry, taking almost half of the entire market share.

The 2004 Nissan Titan was the first real contender of a Japanese manufacturer to rival the full-size half-ton pickup trucks made popular by the Big Three. The 300-horsepower 5.6-liter V8 with an advanced 5-speed automatic transmission in extended or crew cab made waves back then, taking 80% of the half-ton pickup truck sales until it slowed down because early releases were deemed unreliable. There are still loyal  fans and enthusiasts up to now that believe the Nissan Titan is one of the best.

Another truck from a Japanese manufacturer also made the list. The 2006 Honda Ridgeline was honored for its innovation after being the first pickup truck to have an in-bed lockable trunk, as well as a dual-action tailgate that didn’t only fold down, but also off to the side for easy and convenient access to the bed. In addition, 2006 Honda Ridgeline also made some noise because it favored an independent rear suspension over conventional leaf springs giving passengers a more comfortable ride.

Finally, the author named the 2009 Ford F-150 the most significant pickup truck of the decade because it “remains the gold standard against which other half-ton pickup trucks are compared”. In 2009, Ford updated the reliable and much loved 2004 F-150 and gave buyers 7 different models, not including engine and cab type choices. With a great 6-speed transmission and groundbreaking features that others try to copy, the Ford F-150 is the bestselling truck because it caters to everyone.

Other trucks who made the Top 10 are the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra Heavy Duty with 6.6-liter Duramax Diesel, the 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche, the 2005 Toyota Tacoma, the 2007 Toyota Tundra, the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 and the 2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor. The 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac and the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra Two Mode Hybrids are also honorably mentioned. Read the full article here.

New tow rating standards take effect on 2013

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

tow testUp until 2013, there is still no legitimate standard to compare the trailer tow ratings advertised by various truck manufacturers. Because of this, a manufacturer can perform tests in conditions that would help them achieve the highest possible rating. But through the efforts of the Society of Automated Engineers (SAE), this will now change.

The tow vehicle trailer rating committee of the SAE, in cooperation with both local and international auto manufacturers, presented the SAE's Surface Vehicle Recommended Practice J2807 to determine the maximum permissible gross combination weight (GCWR) of the tow vehicle and the trailer, as well as the maximum permissible trailer weight rating (TWR). This new standard was approved in April of 2008 and will be mandatory for the tow ratings of all tow vehicles starting 2013.

The Surface Vehicle Recommended Practice J2807 stipulates all the conditions that have to be met before a manufacturer can claim the maximum tow rating for a particular vehicle. The conditions that need to be met include acceleration performance requirements, grade launch requirements, highway gradeability, handling requirements and braking requirements.

GM’s yearly incentive program will start this week

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

red-tag-eventIn attempts to lower its left over 2009 inventory, General Motors Co. is initiating hefty incentive programs in its four remaining brands particularly Buick-GMC’s Holiday Event, Cadillac’s Season’s Best and Chevrolet’s Red Tag Events. Because of this, GM notably maintains the highest per-vehicle incentive spending in the entire industry spending an average of $4,000 per vehicle.

At GM’s press conference yesterday in Detroit, VP for Sales Susan Docherty announced that they wanted to keep their inventory between 425-450,000 by the first quarter of next year and she was confident that they would be able to reach that target. Docherty was slated to announce the company’s performance after they filed for bankruptcy a few months back at the said press conference.

GM has raised its vehicle supply on its dealer lots starting November 1 to accommodate the expected increase in demand because of the incentive programs. And while they have maintained their 19.5% US market share and increased retail sales from last year by 15%, they are not expecting the numbers to soar anytime in 2010. Docherty’s not worried though.

“It's nothing to write home about,” she said. “We're seeing some improvement and lift from the 2009 calendar year, but I don't think 2010 will be a stellar year. It's going to be a year for some stabilization.”

GM reportedly expects to sell 11-12 million units in the US next year.

2009 TORC SRT Limited 2WD Truck Champion is Keith Steele

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

br2mq8w0350_q

Keith Steele became the 2009 TORC SRT Limited 2WD Truck Champion after winning the first eight rounds of the season. With only two rounds to go and only 50 more season points to be earned, his 53-point lead over the next closest competitor, Luke Johnson has earned him the championship. Steele has won ten consecutive wins since last season.

Steele's wins were not earned just from pure skill, though there's no doubt he has that. His vehicle, #29 Monster Energy Kumho Tire Chevy Limited Truck has been instrumental to his streak. Steele only needed a few laps before taking the lead and maintaining his position throughout the remainder of the race.

For off-road truck racing enthusiasts and Keith Steele fans alike, the next racing event is at Crandon, Wisconsin on September 5 and 6 for the 40th Anniversary Off-Road Racing Celebration.

GM Re-Leases Luxury Models Again

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

2010_cadillac_srx_wide_main_a

General Motors started a new leasing program for selected 2009 and 2010 Cadillac, GMC, Chevrolet and Buick models earlier this month. While demand for their vehicles has picked up the last few months, 2009 was truly a tough year for GM after experiencing a 30% drop in their overall sales. With the recession going on, it has been extremely tough for them to keep up without a leasing program. Fortunately, they are now piloting a new leasing program in partnership with US Bank set to run until August 31, 2009 in selected areas such as New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Michigan and Ohio, as well as a national lease on the all-new Cadillac SRX.

"GM and our dealers have done an incredible job without a leasing program throughout this difficult economic period, but we always knew that we would get back into leasing as it is important to a certain group of our customers," said Mark LaNeve, Vice President of US Sales for GM. "We have a number of products that offer a great opportunity for a lease option. Also, leases are an important part of the luxury market, so we decided that launching the all-new 2010 Cadillac SRX crossover with a national lease will add a lot of excitement."

They will initially be leasing the following 2009 models: Cadillac CTS, Chevrolet Malibu and Chevrolet Traverse, as well as these 2010 models: Cadillac SRX, 2010 Buick LaCrosse, Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Equinox.

Jeromy’s 2005 Chevy Silverado 2500HD Duramax/Allison LT 4×4

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

This truck is a 2005 Chevy Silverado, which Jeromy first bought to pull his fifth wheel. Today, he uses it as a daily truck3driver/construction and definitely for PLAY. In March of 2007, Jeromy’s brother, who also happens to be his best friend passed away. A few weeks later, knowing how much his brother loved the Silverado as much as he did, Jeromy decided to rebuild his truck in his brother’s memory after losing the main bearings in the engine at around the same time. Jeromy’s brother was carried to his final resting place in the bed of Jeromy’s Duramax because according to him, that’s what his brother would have wanted. Jeromy spent a year and a half saving up to pay for rebuilding the engine using aftermarket parts. 1600 miles later, he had to fix it the second time around, but now it’s back on the road and as good as new.

He’s got a BMS/Burkhard built engine complete with Howard’s rods, ARP Head Studs, a DPR-HV Oil Pump, a bunch of MPI TwinTurbos, a Suncoast Level 3 Tranny, a 4” straight pipe exhaust, Bobo EFI Live Tuning, Kennedy Diesel Duramax Dual Lift pumps and pickup and SD tie rod sleeves. On the utside, his 2005 Chevy Silverado has been debadged, has Escalade handles, Rhino linings, Westin Nerf Bars and Helo Maxx 8 rims on BF Goodrich All Terrains. While on the inside, it’s got Autometer C2 pyro/boost/oil pressure gauges. Jeromy does all the work needed on his truck except for those involving the engine. Right now, he installed custom license plates in memory of his brother and all that’s left for him to do is add badges made in his brother’smemory and his name painted on his backglass using the ghost paint scheme.

Steve’s Chevy Silverado

Monday, August 25th, 2008

This truck was purchased brand new from Carr Chevy of Beaverton, OR. It is a 2007 Silverado-LT 2500HD Crew Cab, Short Bed, Classic w/ Duramax +Alison Transmission, XM Radio, Sunroof, and much much more!

"Purchased new as one of the last 2007 "Classic" Silverado 3/4 ton Duramax units on the lot.

A working diesel, not a driveway queen: I tow a 30' Outback TT and haul 650lbs of astronomy instruments with my truck. Of the 16,000+ miles on the truck, over 12,000 have had the trailer behind.

First "road trip" for this truck and my then new Outback trailer travelled from Portland to Nora Springs, Iowa in May 2007. We encountered road-closing blizzards on the way to and from, in MAY! Roads closed in Wyoming from Rawlins to Laramie and again on the way home in Montana between Bozeman and Butte. Go figure...

The truck has been border to border in the west, but only as far east as the Mississippi River. Yes, we have driven on the Beach in Oregon.

Earlier this summer, I used the truck to uproot trees in my yard. With about 600 lbs of balast in the bed, low-range and 4WD, everything was going fine. The Silverado Duramax combination was winning all the battles. Then, the darn 40,000 lb rated chain broke. I had to double the left-overs of the chain to get the last tree out... The Silverado still won the day. Like I said, a working truck..."

Carr Chevy also installed the performance and exterior accessories on this Crew Cab trailer hauler

  • AirRaid
  • MBRP 5" cat-back exhaust
  • Edge Juice w/Attitude
  • Billsteins
  • Wrangler Silent Armor tires
  • Leer hard tonneau cover with red and white LED lights + Remote Locking integration
  • Bed-Slide load mgmt
  • Mud Flaps
  • Nurf Bars
  • Rain Drip Shields
  • PIAA Wipers and bulbs

Steve's word of advice is:

"DON'T sipe your tires on a truck with this HP and torque. It will tear the rubber right off the tires. I got replacement Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor tires at 9,000 miles after large chunks of tread started coming off of the original siped Silent Armors. To their credit, Discount Tires stood behind the problem 100%. NO charge to me! NO problems with the replacements."

Congratulations Steve on your beautiful towing machine!

Larry’s 2004.5 Chevrolet “LLY”

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Attention everyone! We would like to welcome our first GM vehicle to the "truck of the day"! Today's GM was submitted by Larry. Larry's truck is a 2004.5 Chevy "LLY" with the Duramax Diesel Engine. It was purchased from All American Chevy and according to Larry, was a "test mule" for LLY and LBZ Duramax Performance Parts.

This truck certainly has its share of performance parts. Installed we have...
